The Beginning

APi began as a small insulation division of the Reuben L. Anderson-Cherne Mechanical Company, based in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Leadership Change and Diversification
1964
Reuben’s son, Lee R. Anderson Sr. became president in 1964. He launched a strategic initiative to diversify APi within the construction and construction-related industries. In 1985, APi entered the fire protection space with the acquisition of Viking Automatic Sprinkler.
International Growth
1997
APi Incorporated became APi Group. In 2000, APi Group established its presence outside the U.S. with the acquisition of Vipond, U.K.
Russ Becker joins APi as President
2002
Russ Becker joined APi Group as President in 2002 after a successful tenure at The Jamar Company, an APi Operating Company. He was named APi Group CEO in 2004. Guided by his unwavering commitment to operational excellence, safety, and people-first leadership, Russ established APi Group’s “The Care Factor,” a core belief and cultural cornerstone that ensures every team member feels valued, respected, and empowered. This philosophy underpins his dedication to fostering a work environment rooted in compassion and support for all teammates.
Building Great Leaders® Established
2015
APi’s long-standing commitment to leadership development was formalized as our purpose in 2015, with the launch of Building Great Leaders® - our enduring purpose and the name of our internally created development program. Building Great Leaders® is about investing in people as human beings, so every teammate knows they are valued for who they are, not just what they do.
Public Listing and Foundation Launch
2020
APi Group officially became a public company in 2020, following its acquisition by J2 in 2019. APi Group is listed on the New York Stock Exchange with the ticker symbol APG. The APi Group Foundation was also launched in 2020, with a focus on Building Great Communities and supporting youth, historically underserved populations, and veterans.
Global Growth and Expansion
2022
APi Group nearly doubled in size and expanded its global footprint with the acquisition of Chubb Fire and Security, the company’s largest acquisition to date.
Care Factor Fund Launch
2025
The Care Factor Fund launched in June 2025 to support APi Group team members around the world whose children or dependents face unexpected challenges related to mental health or substance abuse. This effort underscores our shared commitment to the safety, health and well-being of our team and our extended APi family, demonstrating an important part of our culture, The Care Factor.

Today, APi Group is a global, market-leading business services provider with more than 29,000 teammates and 500 locations around the world. APi is celebrating its centennial with $1.5 million in community giving through our foundation and in partnership with our companies and teammates.
